Religion plays a major role in U.S. addiction recovery

A 2019 study published by Faith Counts in the Journal of Religion and Health found that 73% of addiction treatment programs in the United States include a spirituality-based element.
Researchers noted that many recovery programs incorporate 12-step models, spiritual counseling, support groups, or discussions centered around meaning, hope, and personal transformation. While not all programs are explicitly religious, spirituality continues to play a significant role in the recovery process for millions of Americans.
The study specifically connected this trend to recovery models influenced by Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12-step programs that reference reliance on God or a Higher Power.
As addiction and mental health challenges continue affecting communities nationwide, the findings highlight how spiritual support remains a common component of addiction recovery in the U.S.
